The Project Friendship Society encourages the community of Prince George to open its heart, and find ways to connect people with special needs into local interests groups, and associations. Connections are based on abilities versus disabilities, and create opportunities for isolated people to find friendships, gain experience, build confidence, and be valued. Project Friendship is committed to building a stronger more diverse community, a community that extends hospitality and welcomes everyone. When a community is strong, everyone contributes: young, old, disabled or otherwise. In a strong community, people are happier, healthier and more productive. Often people with disabilities, illnesses or injuries lack opportunities to participate in the community. They are not expected or given a chance to contribute. Other obstacles they face result in isolation and loneliness including a lack of transportation, accessibility, and limited resources. Because of this, Project Friendship's help is given freely to the best of our ability. Everyone has interests, gifts and dreams, including people with special needs. All they need is a little encouragement to develop their abilities and fulfill their dreams. The "Gift of Hospitality" can be incredibly rewarding. We encourage you to reach out and help them get connected. | ![]() Bob & Barbara Harkins with Merl Sandberg |
Project Friendship has developed an inventory of over 900 local community associations and interest groups. The PG Connector Directory is a great asset in helping us find connection opportunities. If you know someone who is lonely and isolated due to special needs, and you feel they would do well connected in the community, then please contact us to help.

People are referred to us by service agencies, families, friends, or by calling us themselves. We meet with all referrals to help them identify their abilities, and brainstorm community connection ideas. This may be all that's required to help the person, family, or caregiver to open doors for them into the community. If additional help is required, Project Friendship will spend the time needed to help the person further identify their abilities and interests, and investigate opportunities available within the community where similar interests are shared. We then make contacts on their behalf and encourage the group to welcome them. |
We nurture the connections, creating opportunities for multiple relationships to develop. This process can be lengthy depending on the severity of the person's special needs and the availability of opportunities in the community. We try to develop more than one connection where possible. Through this process the person gains positive new experiences and adventures.
- Are you involved in a local interest group?
- Has membership in your group created opportunities for you to develop new friendships?
- Do you feel your involvement in your club or association gives you an opportunity to contribute something to your community?
- Would your group welcome a new member, who has a similar interest and desire to participate, even if they have special needs?
- Would you be willing to share your area of interest?
- Could you help a person with a special need become a member of your interest group?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions and might be willing to share your interests, please contact us. We know people who may share your interests, and who would appreciate being welcomed to participate in a local club or interest group.
